Altai ( Kazakh and Russian Алтай, until January 3, 2019 Syrianovsk , Зыряновск ) is a city in Kazakhstan .

It is located in East Kazakhstan and is the capital of the Altai Audany administrative district (formerly Syrjan).

geography

Altai is located in the easternmost part of the country, not far from the border with the Russian Republic of Altai , on the Berjosowka river not far from its confluence with the Buchtarma . The distance to Öskemen , the regional capital, is about 180 km. The surroundings of Altai are shaped by the Altai Mountains of the same name .

population

Altai has a population of 35,440 (2020). After the end of the Soviet Union , the population began to decline, mainly due to emigration. The city is still strongly Russian today, Russians make up around 80% of the population, Kazakhs only around 13%, the rest is distributed among other nationalities.

history

Altai was founded on May 5, 1791. It received city rights on January 17, 1941.

Economy and Transport

Altai is a lead and zinc processing industrial site owned by the mining company Kazzinc . The origins of mining in this region go back to 1791 when rich ore deposits were discovered here.

The city is the end of a railway line that branches off the Turkestan-Siberian Railway in Lokot ( Russia ) .
