Kazzinc ( Russian Казцинк Kaszink ) is a Kazakh mining company based in Öskemen . It was founded in 1997 and belongs to the Swiss group Glencore . Kazzinc's products primarily include zinc , lead and copper as well as the precious metals gold and silver .

history

The company was created on January 7, 1997 by order of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev through the merger of the three large companies Ust-Kamenogorsk Lead and Zinc Combinate , Leninogorsk Polymetallic Combinate and Zyrianovsk Lead Combinate , all of which were previously majority owned by the Kazakh state. At the same time, the newly created company was privatized; the Swiss company Glencore International AG took on a 50.7 percent stake as a private investor. Production started on February 1, 1997.

In 2004 the company acquired the rights to the mine Shaimerden in the region Karaganda . This deposit contains reserves of around one million tons of zinc. In October 2012, Glencore increased its stake to 69.6 percent; Glencore acquired a further 19 percent of Kazzinc for a price of approximately $ 400 million.

Since the company was founded in 1997, the group has increased the output of the five main products enormously. The zinc output has more than doubled since 1997.

Locations

  • The company's headquarters are in Öskemen . To the north-east of the city is the Öskemen ( ) Metallurgical Complex by Kazzinc, which was built in the 1960s as an extension of the old zinc refinery. The ores extracted from the company's deposits are processed here; the production mainly includes the metals zinc , copper , lead and the precious metals gold and silver .
