Leanid Leanidawitsch Karnijenka ( Belarusian Леанід Леанідавіч Карніенка ; born August 20, 1987 in Klimawitschy ) is a former Belarusian cross-country skier .

Career

Karnijenka made his international debut in January 2005 at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Monthey . There he won the bronze medal in the 10 km individual race in free style. Over 7.5 km in classic style he finished 16th at the finish. At the following Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Rovaniemi , he missed a top placement. After rank 59 in the 2 × 10 km pursuit, he reached rank 20 in the individual over 10 km.

A year later, Karnijenka was able to improve slightly at the Junior World Championships 2006 in Kranj , Slovenia , but there was still no medal success. The best result was the 16th place in the pursuit. On December 17, 2006, he made his debut in the cross-country skiing world cup at the relay world cup in La Clusaz . As 14th, the Belarusian relay had no chance, as expected.

In February Karnijenka started at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . After he was eliminated in the individual race over 30 km, he surprisingly won the silver medal over 10 km behind the Norwegian Lars Berger . He was helped by changing weather conditions, which suited him as a starter with a low starting number. In his last race of the World Cup, the relay, he reached 13th place.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , Karnijenka started in Beitostølen for the first time in an individual World Cup. However, he remained far behind the points. In December he started for two races in Krasnogorsk in the Eastern Europe Cup , but did not get past 50th place there either. At the following U23 cross-country skiing world championship in Males , Italy , he was able to achieve a top 10 position at the junior world championship for the first time in tenth in the sprint. In the 15 km individual race he retired early, the 30 km individual race he finished in 17th place.

On December 14th, 2008 he finished 15th in the Davos sprint for the first time in the points. Also in January in Rybinsk , Russia , he succeeded in doing this as 29th. At the subsequent Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 in Liberec , he clearly missed the repetition of his 2007 success. He finished the cross-country skiing season in 128th place in the overall World Cup ranking and 74th in the overall Sprint World Cup ranking.

At the beginning of his last season in 2009/10 he succeeded with the relay in Beitostølen in ninth place for the first time a relay placement among the ten best teams in the world. In January he also managed to finish ninth in the Rybinsk team sprint. He then got a starting place at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . In the sprint race, he finished 51st, before finishing the individual race over 15 km in 63rd place. In the team sprint, he was eliminated in the semifinals.

After the games, Karnijenka also competed in the military sports runs in Cogne . He then ended his active cross-country skiing career.
