Dahl made his international debut at the end of January 2001 at the Junior World Ski Championships in Karpacz - Szklarska, Poland . In the sprint he won the silver medal there, with the Norwegian 4x10 kilometer relay he was third and in the individual race over ten kilometers in classic style fifth. In the 30-kilometer freestyle race, however, he only achieved 35th place. Four weeks later, he started his first race in the cross-country skiing world cup in Oslo . As 35th, he just missed the points.
In February 2002 Dahl started in the cross-country skiing Continental Cup for the first time . After good performance there and at the following FIS races in his home country Norway, he returned to the A-squad in March and achieved his first World Cup points and his first top 10 position with ninth place in the Oslo sprint . Dahl started the 2002/03 season with two top 10 placements in the Continental Cup in Gaasbu . Back in the World Cup, he also celebrated a place in the top ten in Cogne. Despite this success, he was unable to establish himself in the A-roster and regularly switched between A and B-ranks.
It was not until March 2003 that Dahl left the B squad and from then on only competed internationally in the World Cup alongside the local FIS races. In December 2003 Dahl celebrated two podium places in Toblach and Val di Fiemme , including a third place in the team sprint with Håvard Solbakken and a second place in the sprint, in which he only had to admit defeat to Jens Arne Svartedal . He was also on the podium again in the Stockholm sprint in February. A little later he finished the season in sixth place in the Sprint World Cup standings. In the overall World Cup ranking, Dahl finished 26th.
Dahl started the 2004/05 season with a good sixth place in the Bern sprint . From January 2005, the Norwegian started in addition to his appearances in the World Cup, also in the Alpine Cup and Scandinavian Cup. In the World Cup he was able to score many times during the season, but missed his result from last season and ended up in the overall standings only in midfield. At the beginning of the following season, Dahl continued to miss top positions. It wasn't until February 2006 that he managed to get back on the podium with third place in the Sprint World Cup in Davos . However, it remained the last top spot for the time being. Until the end of 2006, he was only able to celebrate wins and podium places in the lower competition classes.
He started the Tour de Ski 2006/07 successfully and finished it on a good 31st place. In the following sprint in Rybinsk , Dahl finished sixth. In the 2007/08 season he finally made it to the top of the world. After third place at the season opener in Düsseldorf in the Sprint World Cup, he finished sixth in the relay. After a weak Tour de Ski 2007/08 and Norwegian Championships 2008 without a medal, Dahl finally surprised with a second place in the sprint in Otepää . In the team sprint in Liberec , he also finished third on the podium. In March he finished the season in third place in the Sprint World Cup classification. In the overall World Cup ranking he only achieved 19th place due to poor results in the distance races.
Dahl secured an even better result in the overall standings in the following 2008/09 season . At the opening World Cup in Kuusamo , he was again on the podium in third place in the sprint. The Tour de Ski 2008/09 finished a few weeks later Dahl in 21st place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , he reached 15th place in the sprint race. He did not start in the other competitions. In March 2009 Dahl ran again on the podium in Trondheim and finished the season in 16th place in the overall World Cup ranking.
On December 13, 2009, Dahl celebrated his first World Cup victory in the sprint in Davos . He also showed his good performance in Canmore and finished second. Previously, as in Turin in 2006, he had not been included in the squad for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver due to the strong competition among the Norwegians.
At the beginning of the 2010/11 season he won the sprint stage at the season opener in Kuusamo. In January 2011 he finished third again on the podium in the team sprint in Liberec. At the end of the season in Lahti , he narrowly missed another individual podium as fourth in the sprint. In the following years he increasingly chased the competition at individual World Cups. Only in team sprints and relay races did he still achieve top placements.
In December 2013, the now 32-year-old competed in long-distance races in the Cross-Country Marathon Cup for the first time . Dahl was 35th in Livigno . A few days later, he was contesting his last World Cup race to date. In January 2014, he finished second at the Cross-Country Skiing Marathon Cup in Val di Fiemme. In August 2014, as in previous years, he started in roller-skiing competitions. In 2013 and 2015 he won the Flyktningerennet over 44 km classic. At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he won La Sgambeda . In the further course of the season he won the Wasalauf and the Birkebeinerrennet . He was also second at Årefjällsloppet and third at Toblach – Cortina and at the end of the season he finished third in the overall ranking of the Ski Classics . In April 2016, he won the Nordenskiöldsloppet , the longest cross-country skiing race in the world over 200 km. The following year he won the Wasalauf.
