Peeter Kümmel (born April 11, 1982 in Tartu , Soviet Union ) is an Estonian cross-country skier .

life and career

Kümmel's best result at the Junior World Championships in 2002 in Schonach was 20th place in the classic mass start competition over 30 kilometers, which his compatriot Aivar Rehemaa surprisingly won. In the sprint competition he missed the finals as the best Estonian starter with 36th place. During his first use in the cross-country world cup in January 2003 over the distance of 30 kilometers classic (mass start) in his native Otepää , he gave up lying in last position before half-time of the race. In the following years, Kümmel improved his performance, especially in sprint competitions. In March 2005 he was nominated for the World Cup in Lahti . In the sprint competition, which was held in the free technique, he surprisingly reached the finals and won his first World Cup points in 17th place. From the 2005/06 season, Kümmels became a permanent member of the Estonian World Cup team, but mostly only started in sprint competitions in which he passed the qualification several times. This enabled him to take part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . There, however, he could not fully confirm the performances from the World Cup and had to be satisfied with 38th place.

In his best season to date, 2006/07 , Kümmel sprinted two top ten finishes in seventh and eighth in Rybinsk and Changchun . At the end of the season he finished 25th overall in the sprint ranking of the World Cup. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo reached cumin in the qualifications of the sprint competition, although a time that would have given him for a place in the finals, but was as well as the Italians Renato Pasini disqualified because he some steps in the skating technique had run . Together with Priit Narusk , however, he reached the final in the team sprint. In the end, the duo took tenth and last place in the final. His best result in a World Cup competition to date was achieved by Kümmel in the sprint in Otepää in the 2007/08 season . After a rather bad season and up to this point without World Cup points, he surprisingly reached the finals and sprinted to fifth place in front of his home crowd. After Kümmel survived the qualification for the finals in all of his World Cup appearances in the 2008/09 season and gained World Cup points, he was also nominated for the 2009 Nordic World Ski Championships . In Liberec he was eliminated in the quarter-finals and was 25th. His best result was achieved by Kümmel in the 2009/10 season again in his native Otepää, where he reached the semi-finals and finished ninth. For him, this meant qualifying for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver . There he just missed qualifying for the semifinals as 14th. In the team sprint, he retired with Anti Saarepuu in the semifinals and took 16th place. After a 14th place in the World Cup sprint in Otepää and a ninth place in Rybinsk in the 2010/11 season , Kümmel started at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo. There he surprisingly reached the finals in the sprint competition and achieved sixth place, his best career result to date.
