Johannes Ernst Köhler (born June 24, 1910 in Meran ; † September 12, 1990 in Weimar ; also Johannes-Ernst Köhler ) was a German organist, cantor and university professor in Weimar.

Life

Johannes Ernst Köhler completed his training (1929–1933) in Halle (Saale) and at the State Academy for Church and School Music in Berlin with Hans Chemin-Petit , Fritz Jöde and Wolfgang Reimann, among others . After that he was organist at the Berlin Philharmonic in 1932/1933 and at the Pauluskirche in Berlin-Lichterfelde in 1933/1934. In 1934 he became city organist at the Herder Church in Weimar. At the same time he received a position as a lecturer at the State University of Music there , where he worked until his retirement in 1975. Köhler joined the NSDAP in 1937 .

After the Second World War he became a member of the main board of the CDU in the Soviet occupation zone and GDR . At his suggestion, the Bach Days have been held in Weimar since 1946. On August 4, 1950, as part of the 700th anniversary of the city of Weimar for the opening of the Bach Days, he inaugurated the Bach site in the former castle chapel, which, until it was politically converted into a book magazine in 1962, was the room for the concert series. In particular, his concerts on the organ of the Bach site in Weimar were legendary. Also in 1950 he was appointed church music director and professor. He combined his Weimar offices with concert tours through Europe and the USA , as well as with many radio, television and recordings. He was a dominant organist personality and especially known for his virtuosity and improvisation skills. His musical legacy has been in the archive of the "Franz Liszt" University of Music since 2007.
