Andrew Newell (born November 30, 1983 in Bennington , Vermont ) is an American cross-country skier .

Career

Andrew Newell lives in Shaftsbury and starts for Stratton Mountain School . At the Junior World Championships in 2001 in Karpacz , Poland , he was sixth in the sprint, 42nd over 30 kilometers in free technique and 66th over 10 kilometers in classic style. He made his debut a week before his 18th birthday in a Continental Cup race in Vernon (48th). At the 2001 national championships in McCall he reached seventh place in the sprint, two months later at the Canadian championships in Valcartier he won the silver medal. In Schonach he appeared again in 2002 at a junior world championship . After finishing second in the sprint qualification as in the previous year, he finished eighth in the race and finished 48th in classic technique over 30 kilometers. A year later in Sollefteå , the sprint competition at the Junior World Championships was exactly the same, only Newell improved by one place in the end. Over 10 kilometers in the classic technique, he reached 51st place. The taking place shortly after Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme , he was 31 at his first start in the sprint in Rumford he won in early 2004 for the first time the US title of sprint master. Until mid-February, the young American competed only in the Continental Cup and FIS races apart from the national and international championships . He made his World Cup debut at the sprint in Stockholm , where he was 43rd.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2005 , he competed in sprint (12th) and team sprint (14th). In the national championships in Snowfarm , Newell won silver behind Torin Koos . With this he reached in the Canmore team sprint in December 2005 for the first time with ninth place among the top ten of the World Cup. The following January he even came fourth in the Oberstdorf sprint. In the 2006 Olympic Games of Turin he began very successful and was second in the sprint qualification. In the race, however, he was only 16th and in the team sprint with the US team he reached 13th place. In the post-Olympic sprint in Changchun , he came third on the podium for the first time. In the sprint world cup, he reached eighth place. In the 2006/07 season he came in all eight individual sprints in the World Cup in the points and three times in the top ten. In February 2007 he finished 13th in the team sprint and fifth in the sprint at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . At the US Championships in Houghton , he won the silver medal behind Kris Freeman again. He finished the season in sixth place in the Sprint World Cup. In the following season he came three times in the top ten in the World Cup and reached second place in the sprint in Lahti . In January 2008 he became the American sprint champion in Houghton . At the end of the season, he achieved tenth place in the Sprint World Cup. Also in the 2008/09 season he came eight times in the points and twice in the top ten. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , he finished 12th in the sprint and with the US cross-country relay. In the following season he took third place in the sprint in Drammen, his third podium finish in the World Cup. Furthermore, he achieved a top ten placement five times and thus reached 19th place in the overall World Cup and fourth place in the Sprint World Cup. At the season highlight, the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver , he finished 45th in the sprint, 13th place with the relay and ninth place in the team sprint.

In the 2010/11 season Newell reached the points in all sprint races and thus finished eighth in the Sprint World Cup . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 , he achieved 14th place in the relay and tenth place in the team sprint and sprint. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he finished the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo in 72nd place. In the further course of the season he came twice in the top ten. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he reached 21st place in the sprint, 14th place in the team sprint and tenth place with the relay. At the World Cup in Davos he just missed a podium finish with fourth place. At the end of the 2012/13 season he finished the World Cup final in Falun in 38th place and reached fifth place in the Sprint World Cup . At the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , he took 18th place in the sprint and 11th place in the relay. The following year he came 17th in the sprint and seventh in the team sprint at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2015 in Falun. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he achieved 50th place over 15 km classic and 21st place in sprint. In February 2018 he ran at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang to 37th place in the sprint and 14th place with the relay. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol , he finished 40th in the sprint.

So far (as of the end of the 2018/19 season) Newell has won four races in the Australia / New Zealand Cup, three races in the Nor-Am Cup and six races in the US Super Tour.
