Hoffman took part until 2011 mainly in competitions of the US Super Tour and the Nor-Am-Cup . He ran his first World Cup race in January 2009 in Vancouver , which he finished with 25th place in the skiathlon and thus also won his first World Cup points. His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo were 14th place in the relay and 29th place over 5 km classic. At the US cross-country skiing championships in Rumford in 2011 , he won bronze in the 30 km freestyle. At the US cross-country skiing championships in Rumford in 2012, he won gold over 30 km classic. At the U23 World Championships 2012 in Erzurum , he won silver over 15 km classic. In the 2012/13 season he finished eighth in Canmore for the first time a top ten placement in the World Cup. He took part in the Tour de Ski 2012/2013 , which he finished in 46th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he finished 15th over 15 km freestyle. At the beginning of the 2013/14 World Cup season , he finished ninth at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo , winning the 15 km pursuit. He took 24th place at the Tour de Ski 2013/2014 . His best placings at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were 26th place over 50 km freestyle and 14th place with the relay. He finished the World Cup season in 35th place in the overall ranking, his best result so far in the overall World Cup ranking. At the US cross-country skiing championships in 2014 in Kincaid Park, he took silver over 50 km classic. His best placings at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun were 31st in the 50 km mass start race and 11th in the relay. After finishing 52nd at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he finished 22nd at the Tour de Ski 2016 and 34th at the Ski Tour Canada . In September 2016 he won the Merino Muster and took third place in the 15 km mass start race at the Australia / New Zealand Cup in Snow Farm . In winter 2016/17 he finished 36th in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer and 26th in the Tour de Ski 2016/17 . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he achieved 57th place in the skiathlon and 50th place in the 50 km mass start race. At the end of the season he came in 52nd place in the World Cup finals in Québec and reached 51st place in the overall World Cup. His best placings at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang were 33rd place in the 50 km mass start race and 14th place in the relay.
