Jefferson County is a county in the state of Colorado in the United States . The county seat is Golden . The county is named after US President Thomas Jefferson .

The Columbine High School , the location of the school massacre in Littleton , located in Jefferson County.

The county had a population of 527,056 people as of the 2000 census . There were 206,067 households and 140,537 families. The population density was 264 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.59 percent white, 0.89 percent African American, 0.75 percent Native American, 2.28 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.18 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.95 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 206,067 households, 33.4 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.1 percent were single mothers. 31.8 percent were not families. 24.5 percent were single households and 6.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.03.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.0 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 96.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 57,339 , and the median income for a family is $ 67,310. Males had a median income of $ 45,306 versus $ 32,372 for females. The per capita income was $ 28,066. 5.2 percent of the population and 3.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 5.8 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 5.1 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
