Chatfield Dam and Reservoir |
The Chatfield Reservoir , also Chatfield Reservoir , is a 599-hectare reservoir at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in the US state of Colorado .
The reservoir belonging to the city of Littleton is located around 30 km southwest of downtown Denver - just outside the metropolitan area on both sides of the Jefferson and Douglas Counties .
Chatfield Dam
Chatfield Lake was created by a dam to contain the South Platte River , completed in 1975 by the US Army Corps of Engineers , which lasted on June 16, 1965 in Douglas County such a devastating flood disaster that eight people were killed and property damage ran into the millions. Today, the four kilometer long and up to 45 meter high Chatfield Dam is one of three large dams that are supposed to protect the Denver area from flooding. Before that - in 1950 - the dam on Cherry Creek Lake was already being built , while the last dam on Bear Creek Lake was not completed until 1982.
Chatfield Park
As part of Chatfield State Park , which was founded in 1975, the lake is a popular recreational area that is visited annually by around 1.5 million people for boat trips and water skiing , but also for swimming and fishing . Between the Denver metropolitan area and the Pike National Forest, Chatfield State Park is also a popular campsite with numerous hiking and biking trails overlooking the foothills of the Front Range . Chatfield is also very popular as a popular launch site for hot air balloon flights .
