The Castlewood Canyon State Park is a state park in Franktown in Colorado , USA. One of the attractions in the park are the remains of Castlewood Canyon Dam on Cherry Creek, a unique piece of Colorado history. You can still see the ruins and damage from a 1933 dam break. The park also features the historic Cherry Creek Bridge.
Dam burst in 1933
When the dam broke on August 3, 1933, a 5 m high tidal wave was created , which poured into the old town of Denver . There were two dead. A larger number of deaths was prevented by the fact that the dam master reported the break of the dam at 2:00 a.m. by telephone to the switchboard in Denver. When the tidal wave arrived 20 miles (32 km) downstream in Denver at 7:00 a.m., police warned the population.
The dam was built in 1890. Around a third of the structure still stands on the western bank of the river. The approximately 100 m long eastern part was washed away. Six bridges were also destroyed.
