The Cherry Creek Lake [ t͡ʃɛɹi kɹiːk ˌleɪk ] is a reservoir in the northern part of the US state of Colorado - just outside of the metropolitan Denver , about 15 kilometers southeast of the state capital in Arapahoe County , and dams the Cherry Creek , a tributary of the South Platte River .

The 3.43 square kilometers and to m to 8 deep lake was created by a 1950 by the US Army Corps of Engineers (Ingenieurkorp the US Army) completed - 31 m high - dam , which in addition to the later built dams Chatfield and Bear Creek Greater Denver was supposed to protect against the flooding of the South Platte River.
