The Cherry Creek Lake [ t͡ʃɛɹi kɹiːk ˌleɪk ] is a reservoir in the northern part of the US state of Colorado - just outside of the metropolitan Denver , about 15 kilometers southeast of the state capital in Arapahoe County , and dams the Cherry Creek , a tributary of the South Platte River .
The 3.43 square kilometers and to m to 8 deep lake was created by a 1950 by the US Army Corps of Engineers (Ingenieurkorp the US Army) completed - 31 m high - dam , which in addition to the later built dams Chatfield and Bear Creek Greater Denver was supposed to protect against the flooding of the South Platte River. The area around the lake is now a popular excursion destination, which was placed under the protection of a state park by the state of Colorado .
