After visiting the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1968 in Burgundy , Friedrich Becker sen. set his life goal to achieve the wine quality of this world-famous winemaker. In 1973 he founded his winery, the main growing area of which is in the cross-border region from the southern Palatinate to Alsace and has other locations within the southern Palatinate. Art professor friend Hans Martin Erhardt from Karlsruhe designed the wine label for him, which is still used today. According to an assessment by the Gault-Millau WeinGuide 2013, the Friedrich Becker winery countsone of the best wineries in the Palatinate, which is expressed in the rating of 4 (with an upward trend) out of 5 grapes. In the area of red wines, it is even given a place among the best in Germany. The winery emerged from a mixed farming operation which, among other things, had also operated small amounts of viticulture; this form of part-time viticulture was widespread in the south of the Palatinate. In the middle of the 20th century, a focus on viticulture determined the further history of the family business.

The family business is run jointly by Friedrich Becker senior, who is responsible for the work in the vineyard, and his son Friedrich Becker jun. as cellar master. With an annual production of 110,000 bottles, the winery is one of the larger operations in the Palatinate.

Becker Sr. is co-founder of the Südpfälzer Winzergruppe 5 Winzer - 5 Freunde , which was founded in 1991 to help each other to improve their wines. The founding group includes Friedrich Becker sen., Thomas Siegrist (Weingut Siegrist), Karl-Heinz Wehrheim ( Weingut Dr. Wehrheim ), Hansjörg Rebholz (Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz) and Rainer Keßler (Weingut Münzberg). All winemakers are members of the VDP . The example caught on and there are now other private winegrowing communities in the growing region.

Locations and grape varieties

With Chardonnay as well as late , white and gray burgundy, Burgundy varieties account for the largest proportion of vineyards, accounting for 60%. Another 22% of the total cultivation area of 22 hectares is planted with Riesling vines, on the rest of the area the varieties Silvaner , Muskateller , Blauer Portugieser , Schwarzriesling , Cabernet Sauvignon , Gewürztraminer and Müller-Thurgau are grown. The total cultivation area is divided into marl , clay and loess soils.

The best locations of the winery are the Schweigener Sonnenberg , the Kammerberg and St. Paul . The latter two are located on French territory near Wissembourg (Weißenburg), which, however, does not prevent a declaration as German wine . The Kammerberg is a recultivated former vineyard owned by the Weissenburg Monastery , which was overgrown until Friedrich Becker began to use the vineyard again in the 1960s.

In addition to wines, brandies , fruit brandies and sparkling wine are also produced.
