Kerttu Elina Niskanen (born June 13, 1988 in Oulu ) is a Finnish cross-country skier .
Career
Niskanen started at the Junior World Championships 2007 in Tarvisio, Italy . There she was 17th and 18th over 5 km freestyle and in the skiathlon . She had her first start in the cross-country skiing world cup in the 2007/08 season on December 2nd in Kuusamo . Over 10 km classic, she took 61st place. At the Junior World Championships in 2008 in Mals , she won bronze in the relay and narrowly missed a medal over the classic 5 km.
In the 2008/09 season she initially took part primarily in competitions of the Scandinavian Cup . Due to her good results in this race, with a win and a third place, she was allowed to participate in the cross-country skiing world cup again at the end of the season. With the 12th place in the 30 km mass start and the 14th place in the sprint, she got her first World Cup points. At the U23 World Championships in Praz de Lys in 2009 , she won bronze in sprint. In the 2009/2010 season she achieved fourth place in the Scandinavian Cup. At the U23 World Championships in 2010 in Hinterzarten , she won gold over 10 km classic.
In the following season she took part in the Tour de Ski , in which she only occupied places in the midfield and did not take part in the final race. Nevertheless, Niskanen managed to establish itself in the World Cup. With tenth place in Otepää on January 22nd, she made it into the top ten for the first time. A week later, at the U23 World Championships in Otepää, she won gold in the sprint and bronze in the skiathlon. She finished the season with 36th place in the overall World Cup. At the Finnish cross-country skiing championships in 2011 in Kuopio , she won gold in the 30 km freestyle.
In the 2011/12 season she reached 16th place in the 2011/12 Tour de Ski and ended the season with 32nd place in the overall World Cup. At the Finnish cross-country skiing championships in 2012, Niskanen took bronze over 3.3 km classic. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , she reached fifth place in the relay and seventh place over 30 km mass start. She finished the 2012/13 season in 11th place overall. At the Finnish cross-country skiing championships in 2013, she won gold in the 30 km freestyle.
The most successful season of her career so far was the 2013/2014 season . She completed the Tour de Ski in fifth place. She won a stage. At the highlight of the season, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , she won silver in the relay and silver in the team sprint together with Aino-Kaisa Saarinen . At the end of the season, she achieved a podium finish in an individual for the first time in Oslo with third place in the 30 km mass start race. At the World Cup final in Falun she finished fourth in the overall ranking. The World Cup season ended for her with fifth place in the overall World Cup and third place in the Distance World Cup. At the Finnish cross-country skiing championships in 2014, she won gold twice and bronze twice.
At the start of the 2014/15 season , she finished ninth at the Nordic Opening . At the subsequent World Cup race in Davos , she took third place over 10 km, her only podium of the season. At the 2015 Finnish championship in Jämi , she won bronze in the sprint, silver over 10 km freestyle and gold over 15 km classic. In February 2015, she won bronze with the relay at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun and took fourth place in the skiathlon and in the 30 km classic mass start race. In the same month she became Finnish champion over 15 km classic. She finished the season in 14th place in the overall World Cup and 12th place in the Distance World Cup. After finishing fifth at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, she finished second in the relay in Lillehammer . At the Tour de Ski 2016 , she finished in the top ten six times and thus achieved fifth place in the overall standings. At the following World Cup in Nové Město , she finished third with the relay. At the end of the season she achieved seventh place in the Ski Tour Canada , ninth place in the overall World Cup and sixth place in the Distance World Cup. In April 2016, she became the Finnish Pursuit Champion. In the 2016/17 season she finished 14th in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer and sixth in the Tour de Ski 2016/17 . She ran the third fastest time on the final stage. At the beginning of February 2017 she was second in the sprint at the Finnish championships. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , she won the bronze medal with the relay. She also achieved sixth place over 10 km classic and fifth place together with Ida Ingemarsdotter in the team sprint. At the end of the season she finished third in the 30 km mass start race in Oslo and 11th in the World Cup final in Québec . She finished the season in eighth place in the overall and distance World Cup. At the beginning of April 2017 she became Finnish champion over 15 km classic in Kontiolahti and third in Ylitornio over 30 km freestyle. After finishing 19th in the Ruka Triple at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, she finished sixth in the Tour de Ski 2017/18 with four top ten finishes . Her best results at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang were sixth place in the 30 km mass start race and fourth place in the relay. At the World Cup finals in Falun she achieved the 11th place and finally reached the tenth place in the overall World Cup and ninth place in the Distance World Cup.
In the 2018/19 season, Niskanen reached 43rd place in the overall World Cup and 21st place in the Distance World Cup with seven places in the points. In Cogne she won her second World Cup classic over 10 km and placed 34th at the World Cup finals in Québec. At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol , she ran in 22nd place over 10 km classic. After 12th place in the Ruka Triple at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, she came 11th in the 2019/20 Tour de Ski . In Lahti she was second with the relay and finally reached 15th place in the overall World Cup and 11th place in the Distance World Cup.
