Altjührden is a district of Varel in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony .

location

Altjührden borders in the south on the district of Ammerland and in the north on the Varel district of Obenstrohe . The center of the town is Kreisstraße 105, Westersteder Straße , where most of the residents live. The Westersteder road opens inside the village in the provincial road 819, as Wiefelsteder street of Obenstrohe on Spohle to Wiefelstede leads.

history

The "tho Oldejührden" family settled in the 15th century. According to the name of the family, the place was initially called "Oldejührden". In the course of time this eventually became "Altjührden". At the beginning of the 19th century, Altjührden only had 260 inhabitants and was almost exclusively agricultural. So until the 19th century only unpaved roads led through the old Jews. This changed when the first paved road, today Westersteder Straße, was built in 1888. Despite the small size, Altjührden got its own school as early as 1766. The current school building on Altjührdener Strasse was completed in 1912.

After the Second World War, the place experienced an economic boom. Mills, dairies, general stores and pubs settled there. In 1959, the Maschal furniture store finally opened.

Economy and Infrastructure

Altjührden is also known outside of Friesland for the Maschal furniture store, which has existed since 1959 and has now expanded to around 40,000 square meters. Furthermore, with the AWE, a feed supplier of regional importance is based in Altjührden. Farms also continue to play a major role.

There was a primary school in Altjührden, but it was closed in 2013 due to a lack of new students. A special school for girls moved into the premises.

The SG / VTB Altjührden plays its home games in the "Manfred-Schmidt-Sporthalle" .
