history

Streek (moor path)

The place Streek owes its origin to an old road connection between Varel and Oldenburg . Before 1750 there were only two routes from Varel to Oldenburg, with the difficult-to-pass moor north of the Wapel in between. The connections ran from Varel via Obenstrohe and Altjührden in the direction of Wiefelstede or via Streek, Jethausen, Chorengelshaus to Jaderberg. In 1674 only four houses were counted in Streek. Around 1749 there was reports of "brisk traffic" which even led to the establishment of an inn. In 1761 the place already had a merchant. In 1800 the number of houses had increased to a total of 29 and from 1834 Albert Meinhard Menzel's inn included a so-called "bowler's house".
