August Howaldt (sculptor)

August Friedrich Theodor Howaldt (born September 28, 1838 in Braunschweig , † July 4, 1868 in St. Andreasberg ) was a German sculptor and modeller from the Braunschweig artist family Howaldt , who worked in Rome and Braunschweig.

August Howaldt was born as the son of the sculptor, ore caster and professor Georg Ferdinand Howaldt . After initial training in his father's studio, he began his studies at the Academy of Arts in Dresden in the sculpture class of Ernst Rietschel , where he remained for a year after his death in early 1861. In 1861, after a short stay in Braunschweig, he turned to Italy and lived in Rome for two years. After returning to Braunschweig, he used his father's studio for his work. In 1863 he married the innkeeper Juliane Kühte from Wolfenbüttel; the marriage of the two remained childless. While his father became known in connection with the Braunschweig Castle through the two-fold Braunschweiger Quadriga , August Howaldt received the order to produce a design for a frieze in the gable of the castle. August Howaldt created the blueprint for a Brunonia , which was surrounded by allegories of the virtues and qualities of the state of Braunschweig . Despite a lot of praise for the design, it was not implemented and the plaster models of his busts and reliefs were then taken over in "Braunschweigs Walhalla" in the hall of the Neustadt town hall as the former city museum and shown as exhibits. He died at the age of 29 as a spa guest in St. Andreasberg in the Harz Mountains of " emaciation ". His brother Hermann Howaldt , who was three years younger than him , later took over the foundry and copper mill from his father and continued it until his own tragic death in 1891.
