Location of Hohenberge in Lower Saxony
Hohenberge is a district of Varel in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony . The area has been populated since the 17th century. It is named after the hill located here, which protrudes prominently from the flat marshland . One of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the Oldenburg region has been located on the hill since the beginning of the 18th century .
To the north of the district is the former Hohenberge garbage dump , where the waste from the southern part of the Friesland district was disposed of from 1974 to the end of 2004. The waste mountain of the old field is around 22 meters high, that of the extension area around 24 meters, and accordingly protrudes from the flat marshland .
