Jewish cemetery (Hohenberge)
The Hohenberge Jewish cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in the Lower Saxony town of Varel in the Friesland district .
The 1,822 m² cemetery , on which there are still 121 tombstones (when recorded in 1978/79 there were 120 tombstones, one tombstone was subsequently placed by family members after 1980) is located on Neuwangerooger Straße in the Hohenberge district of Varel, about three kilometers east of the city center. It was documented from 1702 to 1942, the oldest preserved stone dates from 1777.
Some gravestones in the cemetery were misused during the Second World War for the construction of the flak positions in Schweiburg and at Vareler Hafen, they were brought back to the cemetery after the war.
