Winkelsheide is located about two kilometers west of the city of Varel on the Jade Bay at an altitude of about five meters above sea ​​level . The place has a direct motorway connection to the A 29 and is only five kilometers from the coast of the Jade Bay.

The place Winkelsheide was first mentioned in 1634 when Johann Winkelmann, who died in 1680, settled there. It is believed that this also contributed to the naming of Winkelsheide, which was still called Winkels Heyde around 1650 . Around 1800, Winkelsheide, at that time still part of the Borgsted peasantry, had 15 house owners.

After the wars of freedom of 1813–1815, a number of new houses were built in Winkelsheide, so that in 1818 there were 97 residents and 19 campfire sites. In 1875 the population was already 120, in 1925 140 inhabitants were counted.

The Winkelsheider Krug has existed since 1769, and at times also included baking and brewing rooms. Since the 20th century the jug has been called "Dorfkrug Winkelsheide" and in 2005 its long tradition came to an end. In 2006 there was a reopening of the Dorfkrug under the name "Dorfgrill". In this village grill there is a large assortment of all kinds of different dishes. Among other things, you can also rent rooms there.

Today Winkelsheide is a place that is predominantly built with single-family houses. The adjacent commercial area benefits from the favorable traffic connection to the A 29 - thus also to the A 1 in the south of Oldenburg and the A 28 to the west or east of Oldenburg.

Economy and Infrastructure

In front of the site there is an industrial and commercial area. There is also a bakery, a carpentry shop, the village pitcher and a locksmith's shop in the village. The Voluntary Fire Brigade Borgstede -Winkelsheide, in which 43 volunteers do their service, provides fire protection and general help . A village community brings dozens of Winkelsheider (and Borgsteder) together for various events every year.
