Roland Clara (born March 8, 1982 in Bruneck , South Tyrol ) is an Italian cross-country skier .

life and career

Clara first appeared internationally at the Junior World Championships 2002 in Schonach . Over the classic distance of 30 kilometers, he finished 18th. In the next few years he mainly started in the Continental Cup . After several podium places in the Continental Cup, at the end of the 2004/05 season he was given the opportunity to start in the Cross-Country World Cup . Right at his first start over the classic distance of 50 kilometers, he surprised the world leaders and scored his first World Cup points in eleventh place. He was also able to place in the top thirty in the following competitions. He was unable to confirm these good results in the following Olympic season and placed himself far outside the World Cup points ranks and was therefore unable to qualify for the Olympic Games in his home country. Only at the end of the season did his form improve and he achieved tenth place over 50 kilometers of freestyle in Oslo .

In the 2006/07 season he was able to qualify for a first major international event with several placements among the top thirty. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo he started in the pursuit competition and finished 21st in the double victory of the Germans Axel Teichmann and Tobias Angerer . In the 2007/08 season , Clara managed to establish herself more and more in the extended world elite. At the end of the season in Bormio, he fought eighth place. He finished the Tour de Ski 2008/09 in 27th place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 he reached 27th place over 15 km classic, fifth place in the 30 km pursuit race and fourth place with the relay. In the 2009/10 season he came in 21st place in the Tour de Ski and in 16th place in the World Cup finals in Falun . In his first Olympic participation in 2010 in Vancouver , he finished 36th in the 50 km mass start race.

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Clara took 37th place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo . After a weaker start in the following Tour de Ski 2010/11 , Clara achieved fifth place in the overall standings due to a strong final stage with second place. In February 2011 he took second place with the relay in Rybinsk . In the same month he came at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo on the 28th place in the 50 km mass start race, on the seventh place in the 30 km pursuit race and fifth place with the relay. At the beginning of the following season he finished third in Sjusjoen over 15 km freestyle. In the further course of the season he came in 14th place at the Nordic Opening and 19th place in the Tour de Ski 2011/12 . In February 2012 he won the 42 km freestyle at the Gsieser Tal-Lauf . At the World Cup finals, he finished eighth and thus reached 18th place in the overall World Cup. In the 2012/13 season he achieved 32nd place at the Nordic Opening and 30th place at the Tour de Ski 2012/13 . At the World Cup race in Canmore , he took second place in the skiathlon. In February 2013, as in the previous year, he won the Gsieser Tal-Lauf over 42 km freestyle. At the following Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he came in 21st place over 15 km freestyle, 20th place in the skiathlon and fourth place with the relay. He finished the season in tenth place in the Distance World Cup. In February 2014 he took part in the Winter Olympics in Sochi . There he reached the 29th place in the skiathlon, the 11th place in the 50 km mass start race and the fifth place with the relay. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he finished 33rd at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer . This was followed by fifth place in the Tour de Ski 2015 ; while he won the final mountain pursuit. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 2015 , he achieved 27th place in the 15 km freestyle, 17th place in the skiathlon and sixth place with the relay. He finished the season in 16th place in the overall World Cup.
