The Tons ( Hindi : टोंस, ṭoṅs ) is a right tributary of the Yamuna in northern India .
Most of the east-west course lies in the state of Uttarakhand , its drainage area is the border area of the states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh . The lower 50 kilometers of the river form the border between the two states. At Dakpathar the Tons flows into the Yamuna.
The source rivers of the clay are the Rupin and Supin , which flow together at an altitude of about 1300 m near the small town of Netwar , the most famous place in the Tonstal . The next major city is Dehradun . The clay valley, which is deeply cut in the upper course of the river, is the habitat of a large number of different plants, the largest species of which are the Himalayan cedars . The upper catchment area of the river is in the Govind nature reserve , which is home to snow leopards , Asiatic black bears and musk oxen , among others . The section of the clay near Haripur is one of only four sections of the 39 rivers in the Yamuna Basin, which have been certified by the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests to have completely clean water.
Because of its rapids, some sections of the river are used for rafting and white water canoeing.
The Ichari Dam is about 26 km upstream of the mouth . Below this, only a small amount of water flows in the river bed, as the water at the dam is diverted to the Chibro and then to the Khodri hydropower plant on the banks of the Yamuna. Another dam, the Kishau Dam , is planned to be built 25 km upstream from the Ichari Dam .
