history
The idea for a cross-country skiing world cup in the Düsseldorf area came from an on-snow event in the Neuss ski hall in 2001. The German Olympic team was dressed for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in the Neuss ski hall . There were talks between the then German national cross-country skiing trainer Jochen Behle and the manager of the ski hall, August Pollen, about organizing a World Cup on the Rhine in the still young cross-country sprint discipline. The then mayor of the city of Düsseldorf Joachim Erwin was quickly enthusiastic about the idea. In addition, the FIS could be enthusiastic about the implementation. Within a year, an organizing committee was put together around the organizer of allrounder winter world gmbh & co.kg. The other members of the organizing committee were the West German Ski Association, representing the German Ski Association, and the city of Düsseldorf. August Pollen was head of the organizing committee.
The sponsors were also quickly found with the entire snow event with further attractions on snow also for the spectators, in which the FIS Cross-Country World Cup was integrated. The aim of the organizers was to introduce many people in the flat North Rhine-Westphalia to professionally practiced snow sports and also to arouse interest in sports in the snow. After everything was settled, the first cross-country skiing world cup took place on October 26th, 2002 with the sprint of women and men, one day later the team sprint had to be canceled. After ten editions, the World Cup in Düsseldorf was over. From the 2002/03 to 2007/08 season the World Cup was the season opener in October and from 2008/09 to 2011/12 it was held in December.
