Career

Already at the age of 16, the Davos native and daughter of a Dutchman competed in the cross-country Continental Cup for the first time, where she was 15th out of 30 starters in La Thomasette . In 2005 Laurien van der Graaff took part in a junior world championship for the first time. In Rovaniemi , her best placement was 19th in the sprint competition. In 2006 she was at the Junior World Championships in Kranj 19th over 5 kilometers classic. She celebrated her first victory in a sprint competition of the Alpine Cup (Continental Cup) two years later in Olten .

She was then nominated for a World Cup competition for the first time in March 2008 . In Lahti she missed the qualification as 39th but the entry into the finals. In 2008 and 2009 Laurien van der Graaff started at the U23 World Championship, where she was able to take 20th place in the sprint competition. In 2010 she reached ninth place at the U23 World Cup in Hinterzarten after she had fought for second place in qualifying. At the World Cup in Düsseldorf she just missed qualifying for the finals in 32nd place. She won her first World Cup points in Rybinsk , where she finished 28th.

In the 2010/11 season she qualified several times for the finals in World Cup competitions. Her best result was 21st place in Rybinsk and Liberec . These results secured her a start at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo , Norway , where she failed in qualification as 40th. On her first appearance in the 2011/12 season , Laurien van der Graaff surprised with a third place in the sprint in Düsseldorf. She is only the second Swiss cross-country skier to achieve a podium placement in a World Cup competition. Only Evi Kratzer had managed this before . In 1987, Kratzer won the classic 10 km in Calgary - the year Laurien van der Graaff was born . She also impressed in the team sprint together with her partner Bettina Gruber . As the fourth team, the duo just missed the podium.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , she reached 30th place in the sprint and 11th place in the team sprint. At her first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , she finished 21st in the sprint.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season she took second place in the sprint at the Alpine Cup in Goms. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2017 , she finished 30th in the sprint and seventh in the relay and together with Nadine Fähndrich in the team sprint. At the end of the season she came in 39th place at the World Cup finals in Québec and reached 34th place in the overall World Cup and 14th place in the Sprint World Cup. At the 2017 Swiss Championships in Val Müstair , she came second in the sprint and third over 30 km classic.

At the start of the Tour de Ski 2017/18 in Lenzerheide , Switzerland , Laurien van der Graaff won the sprint competition. It was her first World Cup success and at the same time the second victory for a Swiss woman since Evi Kratzer , who won the classic 10 km World Cup competition in Calgary , Canada in January 1987 . Van der Graaff attributed the success to mental training , which she focused on in the summer of 2017. According to her own statements, she used to be afraid of winning. In January 2018 she won again in the sprint in Seefeld in Tirol . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she took tenth place in the sprint, seventh place with the relay and fourth place together with Nadine Fähndrich in the team sprint. At the end of the season she came in 40th place at the World Cup finals in Falun and finally reached 21st place in the overall World Cup and fifth place in the Sprint World Cup. The following year she ran at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol on 16th place in the sprint, tenth place with the relay and eighth place together with Nadine Fähndrich in the team sprint. After 36th place in the Ruka Triple at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, she and Nadine Fähndrich finished third in the team sprint in Planica and second in Dresden . At the Tour de Ski 2019/20 she came in 25th place and at the end of the season she achieved 31st place in the overall World Cup and 13th place in the Sprint World Cup.
