Nanette Guilford , nee Nanette Gutman (born August 17, 1903 in New York ; † March 17, 1990 ibid) was an American opera singer (soprano).

Life

Nanette Guilford studied with Albert Jeannotte and made her first appearance in the Theater on Century Promenade in The Midnight Rounders of 1921 . This made her one of the first professional singers in the United States to forego training in Europe. From 1923 to 1932 she was engaged at the Metropolitan Opera , initially only in smaller roles. She had her first appearance at the “Met” in Rigoletto . In March 1926 she first appeared in a leading role, the Ginevra in La Cena Delle Beffe . Her other roles at the Metropolitan Opera included Aida , Liu in Turandot and Musetta in La Bohème . Nanette Guilford, who incorrectly stated her age when she signed her first contract with the Metropolitan Opera, was considered a "baby star" throughout her career at this house.

In addition to her appearances on stage, she was also heard in radio broadcasts and sound films. Recordings were also made with the violinist Max Rosen , with whom she was married from 1928 to 1930.

Nanette Guilford died of an infection in St. Vincent's Hospital in New York.
