The A8 road ( English for A8 ) is a largely through the M8 motorway replaced and mostly no longer route as the primary designated trunk road in Scotland . Your eastern beginning is in the center of Edinburgh . From there it leads to the M9 motorway , which it reaches at junction 1. At junction 6 of the M8 motorway east of Glasgow it branches off again from the M8 and runs parallel to it into the center of the city; the A80 road branches off to the northeast in the direction of Cumbernauld . Also west of Glasgow it runs parallel to the M8 to its end at junction 31 and from there on as a four-lane road, from here Primary route, along the Firth of Clyde via Port Glasgow to Greenock , where it is continued by the A78 road .
