The Kingston Bridge in Glasgow, part of the city route
The M8 motorway begins on the Edinburgh bypass A720. At the following motorway triangle the M9 branches off towards Stirling. The M73 , M80 and M77 connect as it runs through Glasgow , the Kingston Bridge crosses the River Clyde near the city center, and then the M74 joins at a fork in the motorway. West of Glasgow, the M898 crosses the Clyde on the Erskine Bridge as a short cross-link to the A82 . The M8 as a motorway ends about 10 miles before Greenock , the four-lane road that continues there is called the A8.
Between Airdrie and Baillieston shortly before Glasgow, the continuous connection had only expressway status until 2017 and was referred to as the A8. The gap between Airdrie and Baillieston was closed on April 30, 2017, and since then there has been a continuous motorway link between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
