St Mungo's Cathedral
St Mungo's Cathedral , also known as Glasgow Cathedral or High Kirk of Glasgow , is a cathedral in the Scottish city of Glasgow . She belongs to the Reformed Church of Scotland . The building is owned by the Crown, with Historic Scotland taking care of the building.
history
The cathedral goes back to the Glasgow patron saint St. Mungo , whose grave is in the crypt of the church. The current Gothic building was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. The church was the seat of the bishops and later the archbishops of Glasgow . Since 1690 the cathedral was no longer the seat of a bishop. The designation as a cathedral has since been a historical honorary title and indicates its original function as a Roman Catholic diocese church of the Archdiocese of Glasgow (today this is St. Andrew's Cathedral ).
Founded in 1124, St Mungo's Cathedral Choir School , renamed High School of Glasgow in 1834 and still teaching students today, is the oldest school in Scotland.
To the east of the cathedral is the main cemetery “ Glasgow Necropolis ” on a hill.
organ
The organ was built in 1931 by the organ builder Willis. In 1971 the instrument was reorganized by the organ builder JW Walker (Ruislip, Middlesex), equipped with new, electric action , and the positive was added as a replacement for the previous solo work. The organ has 67 registers on four manuals and a pedal . The action actions are electro-pneumatic, the stop actions are electric.
