The M48 motorway ( English for, highway M48 ") is a 12-mile highway in England and Wales that these two countries over the old Severn Bridge connects.
This motorway was built in the 1960s as part of the M4 and opened in 1966 together with the Severn Bridge. Due to the ever-increasing traffic over the bridge, which was the bottleneck of the motorway link from London to Wales, was planned a second bridge over the since 1948 Severn - estuary , the 1996 Second Severn Crossing was opened further south. The M4 was laid there and so the M48 motorway was created, which serves as an alternative route in the event that the newer bridge is closed.
