Saertaschorisso mnischwnelobis gsa S10 ( Georgian : საერთაშორისო მნიშვნელობის გზა ს -10 ) is a trunk road in Georgia . The road leads from Gori via Tskhinvali to the Russian border. In Russia the road continues as R297 to Alagir . Most of the S10 is in the de facto independent Republic of South Ossetia .

history

During the Soviet Union , the S10 was one of the few north-south connections through the Caucasus . The road led over a pass of 3000 meters and was often closed due to avalanches and bad weather conditions. In 1985, the 3,660 meter long Roki Tunnel was opened, which bypasses the highest part of the pass. Since then, the road has also been passable in winter.

The Georgian part lies in the de facto independent state of South Ossetia , in which Georgian authorities have no authority. The Russian military has a strong presence here, and a brief war raged in this area in 2008. The de facto border between Georgia and South Ossetia is usually closed and the S10 is therefore not continuously passable. The Roki tunnel is toll and the main source of income for the South Ossetian government.
