The city was founded in 1850 by Prince Mikhail Semjonowitsch Voronzow , the viceroy of the Caucasus , near a former silver mine . Alagir was built as a fortified settlement around a melt and quickly rose to become a center for mining . In 1938 Alagir was promoted to city.

Alagir was occupied by German troops during the German summer offensive in 1942 ( company Edelweiss ) and liberated again in January 1943 after the offensive was discontinued at the turn of the year 1942/43 and the start of the Soviet counter-offensive ( North Caucasian operation ).
