Location of the Ardon ( Ардон ) in the catchment area of the Terek |
The Ardon ( Russian Ардо́н ; Ossetian Ærydon , meaning about Wild River ) is a 102 km long left tributary of the Terek in the Russian Caucasus Republic of North Ossetia-Alania with a catchment area of 2700 km².
The Ardon rises directly north of the main watershed of the Caucasus in Severo-Ossetinski Sapowednik , the North Ossetian nature reserve .
The valley of the Ardon forms one of the main valleys of North Ossetia, on its banks lie the place Nizhny Unal and the cities Alagir and shortly before its confluence with the Terek the city of the same name Ardon .
The Saramag hydropower plants have been under construction on its upper reaches since the 1970s ; after the construction work lay idle for more than a decade from the mid-1980s, it resumed at the end of the last millennium. The commissioning of the first power plant took place at the end of 2009, but electricity production seems to have stopped again at the end of 2010.
