Ardon ( Russian Ардо́н ; Ossetian Ærydon ) is a city with 18,774 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and the capital of the raion of the same name in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania ( Russia ).
geography
Ardon is located in a northern valley of the Caucasus on the west bank of the eponymous river Ardon , about 40 km northwest of the capital of North Ossetia, Vladikavkaz . The closest towns are Digora (10 km west), Alagir (15 km south) and Beslan (20 km east).
history
Ardon was founded by Cossacks in 1824 and got its name from the river of the same name, whose hydronym comes from the Ossetian language and roughly means "wild river".
Ardon remained a small village until the 20th century. In the middle of the century it became the center of the region's agricultural industry and received city rights in 1964. Today Ardon is the fifth largest city in North Ossetia.
