The Cartlian Mountains ( Georgian ქართლის ქედი ) form a mountain ridge in Georgia , which branches off from the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus in a southerly direction.
The Cartlian Mountains form the watershed between the Pschawi-Aragwi in the north and west and the upper Iori in the east. It extends over a length of 100 km in a north-south direction. In the north the mountain range in the Tschitscho reaches a maximum height of 3,076 m . The mountains consist mainly of sandstone , marl and mica schist . Beech and oak forests grow on the mountain slopes. Alpine vegetation thrives at higher altitudes.
