After the western section of the Poti – Baku main line was opened in 1872, the first branching line from Rioni station to Kutaisi went into operation before the main line to Baku was completed . In 1887 it was extended to Tqibuli , where large coal mines were connected. The entire line was electrified in 1946 and 1947 , primarily to increase the capacity of the line and to be able to drive more coal. In 1999 the section between Rioni and Kutaisi was renewed.
Since the renovation in 2010, Kutaisi-1 station has been used by most of the passenger trains ending in Kutaisi ; only the trains to Zqaltubo serve Kutaisi-2 station on the Brozeula – Zqaltubo line . There are two pairs of trains to and from Tbilisi and one to and from Batumi every day . Two pairs of trains run from Kutaisi-1 to Tqibuli-2. Branch lines that were previously in Tqibuli have all been shut down and dismantled.
