Bakuriani ( Georgian ბაკურიანი ) is a resort in the Georgian administrative region of Samtskhe-Javakheti .

geography

Bakuriani is 1700  m above sea level. NN on the northern slope of the Trialeti mountain range in the Lesser Caucasus . The place is considered Georgia's " winter sports capital". In summer it is popular with hikers.

The place is surrounded by coniferous forests , in which the Caucasian spruce dominates. It is located in the Bakuriani Depression , which is a so-called caldera . The bottom consists of the lava from the Mucheri volcano . The climate is relatively humid. The summers are long and warm, the winters cold. From November up to 64 cm of snow falls. The average annual temperature is 4.3 ° C, in January it is −7.3 ° C and in August 15 ° C. The annual rainfall is 734 mm.

history

Hotels were built in Bakuriani from the beginning of the 20th century after the Borjomi – Bakuriani narrow-gauge railway started operating in 1902. In Soviet times, sanatoriums and rest homes were added. The buildings were privatized after the independence of Georgia in 1991 and have since been modernized. Georgia's new upper class has built pompous villas here.

Winter sports

The Sakartwelo ski jump is located in the village .

In winter the place accommodates around 2000 holiday guests. The white season starts in November and ends in March. The difficulty level of the slopes on the local mountain Kochta Gora (German: "Beautiful mountain", 2255  m above sea  level ) is medium to easy. The slopes mostly have tow lifts or chair lifts. There is a ski jump. In addition to ski and snowboard rental, snowmobile, horse-drawn carriage rides and horse riding are also offered in the village.

Attractions

The Bakuriani Botanical Garden, founded in 1910 , covers 17 hectares. It shows around 1200 alpine plants from various Caucasus regions, around 300 plants from Asia and 66 different Caucasian trees and exotic plants. Since 1937 it has been administered by the Georgian Academy of Sciences .

Worth knowing

The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline runs above Bakuriani . Because the place is also located in an earthquake-prone region, the route is controversial among environmentalists .
