Abdul Rehman Antulay

Abdul Rehman "AR" Antulay ( Marathi अब्दुल रहमान अंतुले ; born February 9, 1929 in Ambet, Kolaba District , British India ; † December 2, 2014 in Mumbai ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC), who was among other things between 1980 and 1982 Chief Minister of Maharashtra , member of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha and Minister of various Union governments.

Antulay, son of Hafiz Abdul Gafoor and his wife Zohrabi, first completed an undergraduate degree at Bombay University , which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons.). After studying law , he was admitted to the bar as a barrister-at-law with the British Bar Association ( Inns of Court ) at Lincoln's Inn . He began his political career in 1960 as chairman of the Youth Congress of the Indian National Congress (INC) in the state of Maharashtra and held this position until 1962. In 1962 he was briefly president of a district of the INC and then between 1962 and 1969 Secretary General of the INC of Maharashtra.

In 1962 Antulay was elected for the first time as a member of the legislative assembly of Madhya Pradesh and was a member of this until 1976. He was first chairman of the Committee on Non-Official Bills and Resolutions from 1962 to 1967, and then from 1967 to 1969 chairman of the Committees on Subordinate Legislation and Estimates. In October 1969 he became Minister of State for Law, Justice, Ports and Fisheries in the government of the State of Maharashtra, where he was Minister for Law, Justice, Construction, Communications and Housing until February 1976. On April 3, 1976 he became a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Parliament of India , and was a member of this until July 3, 1980.

1980 Antulay was again a member of the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra and represented the INC until 1989. Shortly afterwards he became Chief Minister of Maharashtra on June 9, 1980 after a temporary presidential rule ( President's rule ) and held this office until his resignation due to of corruption allegations on January 19, 1982, after which he was replaced by Babasaheb Bhosale . In the elections on November 22nd and 26th, 1989 , he was elected for the first time as a member of the Lok Sabha , the lower house of parliament, and after re-elections in 1991 and 1996 he was a member until March 1998. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises between 1991 and 1993 and then from 1993 to 1995 chairman of the Parliament's Joint Committee on MEPs' Facilities and Compensation.

On June 10, 1995, Antulay was appointed by Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao to succeed B. Shankaranand as Minister of Health and Family Welfare in his cabinet , of which he was until the end of Rao's term on May 15, 1996. In addition, on February 8, 1996, he took over the office of Minister for Water Resources from Vidya Charan Shukla and held this office until May 15, 1996.

Antulay was re-elected as a member of the Lok Sabha for the INC in the elections between April 20 and May 10, 2004 , where he represented the Kulaba constituency in Maharashtra until May 2009 . On January 29, 2006, he took over the post of Minister for Minority Affairs in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and held this post until May 22, 2009.

His marriage to Shrimati Nargis Antulay on May 17, 1959 resulted in a son and three daughters.
