Mestia ( Georgian მესტია ) is a small town (Georgian Daba ) in northwestern Georgia and is located at an altitude of about 1500  m in the Greater Caucasus . It is located in the Mingrelia and Upper Svaneti region and is the capital of the historical Svaneti region .

Over 9,316 people live on the territory of the municipality of the same name, Mestia , which includes the whole of Upper Svaneti, including about 1973 in Mestia itself (2014). The number of inhabitants has recently fallen sharply.

The city is mostly inhabited by Swans , a sub-ethnic group of Georgians . It is currently being expanded to become the Upper Svaneti tourist center. Queen Tamar Airport is just outside the town center .

Mestia was largely modernized between 2009 and 2012. Many of the original houses were demolished and replaced by new houses in the Swiss chalet style. Critics complain that Mestia lost face as a result. They fear that similar measures will be carried out in the world cultural heritage site of Ushguli .

Mestia is twin town of the small Italian town of San Gimignano .
