Gonio ( Georgian გონიო ) is a district of Batumi in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara in western Georgia .
It is located about eleven kilometers southwest of the city center of Batumi, south of the mouth of the Chorochi River in the Black Sea . Gonio is a popular seaside resort in Georgia. In the settlement there is the old Roman fortress Gonio , called Apsaros in ancient times .
Gonio was one long for municipality khelvachauri that from the formed in the 1960s eponymous Rajon had emerged. With a resolution of July 15, 2011 with effect from January 1, 2013, the place - as well as the municipal seat of Chelvachauri and 14 other places - was attached to the city of Batumi, which is directly subordinate to the Autonomous Republic. At the last census before the incorporation, Gonio had 2886 inhabitants (2002).
