François Charrière

François Charrière (born September 1, 1893 in Cerniat ; † July 11, 1976 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) was Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Freiburg . With his signature on November 1, 1970, Charrière approved the establishment of the Society of St. Pius X.

Life

François Charrière studied Catholic theology in Freiburg and was ordained a priest on July 15, 1917 . After pastoral work as a vicar in Lausanne, he studied canon law at the Angelicum in Rome, where he received his doctorate in 1923. iur. can. received his doctorate .

From 1924 he was a professor for moral theology at the seminary in Freiburg. In addition, he taught canon law at the seminary from 1929 to 1938 and at the University of Freiburg from 1931 to 1936 .

On October 20, 1945 he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg. He was ordained bishop on November 21 of the same year by the Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland, Archbishop Filippo Bernardini ; Co- consecrators were Viktor Bieler , Bishop of Sion , and Marcel Olivier Maradan OFMCap , Bishop of Port Victoria ( Seychelles ).

In the Swiss Bishops' Conference , Charrière was responsible for questions of ecumenism and the relationship between the church and the state.

With his signature on November 1, 1970, he approved the statutes of the Society of St. Pius X, founded by Marcel Lefebvre , initially ad experimentum .

On December 30, 1970, François Charrière resigned from the leadership of his diocese.
