Viktor Joseph Dewora (also Viktor Joseph Devora ) (born June 21, 1774 in Hadamar , † March 3, 1837 in Trier ) was a German Catholic clergyman and educator.

Life

Viktor Joseph Dewora was born the son of Peter Paul Matthaeus Dewora (1751-1817), cloth manufacturer and bailiff in Hadamar and his wife Maria Anna Henriette Thekla (1754-1818), daughter of Johann Victor Klar, landlord in Hadamar. He had ten siblings.

After attending elementary school in his hometown, he received his first school education from his uncle, an ex-Jesuit, Franz Clar. He studied first in Koblenz and received in the fall of 1794, when Primus upper philosophical class, by the Elector and Archbishop Clemens Wenceslaus of Saxony a place in Trier seminary . Due to the warlike unrest, however, he could not continue his studies without disturbances and difficulties, so he decided to go to Mainz . After acts of war occurred here too, he went to the University of Würzburg , where he heard the lectures of Professors Georg Franz Wiesner (1731–1797), Franz Oberthür , Adam Joseph Onymus (1754–1836) and Johann Michael Feder ( 1753–1797 ). 1824). Under the regents Franz Xaver von Leibes (1753-1828) and Gregor von Zirkel he was accepted into the seminary in Würzburg and trained in pastoral care. He continued this training in the fall of 1796 at the seminary in Fulda and was there on September 25, 1797 by Prince-Bishop Adalbert III. for priests ordained. He then worked as an assistant first in Frickhofen , then in St. Goarshausen , later in Perl , and finally in St. Matthias in Trier, where he was appointed pastor on May 1, 1808 by Bishop Charles Mannay .

In October 1810, the prefect of the Saar Department had a normal school built and a school teacher seminar was founded for the Trier administrative district to improve elementary instruction . The leadership of the teacher seminar was entrusted to the Prefect Viktor Joseph Dewora, who made part of the parish building in St. Matthias available for this purpose. In the autumn of 1810 he began to prepare 42 teachers and seminarians for teaching in his parsonage; he was inspired by the teaching methods of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi . After a short time it soon had a large number of visitors and received support from the French and later Prussian governments; from 1810 to 1824 he managed to train around 700 teachers. In order to involve the general public in the training, he began to hold public exams in 1811. With the financial support of 1,500 Francs annually, plus 300 Francs for heating means, teaching materials and other things, he was able to employ some assistants who could support him. In 1813, however, classes were interrupted because, after the battle of Hanau, sick and dying soldiers stayed for a long time in the rectory, which was used as a side hospital. Lessons could not be fully resumed until 1815. The teachers' college founded by Viktor Joseph Dewora was under the government of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. elevated to a royal educational institution.

1824, after the reorganization of the cathedral chapter of Trier , he was canon at the same time by the then Bishop Joseph Hommer of the preacher and the Episcopal Council, appointed in 1827, he was dean and pastor of the cathedral.

The teacher training college founded by Viktor Joseph Dewora was relocated to Brühl in 1834 at the instigation of the Prussian minister of education, Karl vom Stein zum Altenstein .

He bequeathed 400 thalers to the parish church of St. Matthias so that they could set up a chaplain foundation.
