Jakob Marx (church historian, 1803)
Jakob Marx (also Jakob Marx the Elder ; born September 8, 1803 in Landscheid , † February 13, 1876 in Trier ) was a German Roman Catholic theologian and clergyman .
Life
Marx attended primary school in his hometown until 1819 . He then switched to the grammar school in Trier , which he graduated in 1825. He also studied theology in Trier before he was ordained a priest on September 19, 1829 . Then he was chaplain in Wittlich under the later Bishop Wilhelm Arnoldi . Marx's first publication The Causes of the Rapid Spread of the Reformation in 1834 convinced the Bishop of Trier Joseph von Hommer to send him to the University of Vienna to further study church history and canon law . After his return he became professor of canon law and church history at the Episcopal Seminary in Trier . He held this office until 1870.
Marx planned to do a doctorate in theology at the University of Bonn , but his professorship did not allow for the three-year study at Bonn University. He was in 1863, however, from the University of Breslau the honorary doctorate ( Dr. theol. Hc ) awarded. In 1862 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives for the city and district of Trier, also the initiator of the 1865 Catholic Day in Trier and a founding member and long-standing president of the Trier Catholic Citizens Association, which was founded in 1864. In the years 1868 to 1871 he held the office of vice-president of the Society for Useful Research in Trier .
Marx was appointed cathedral capitular on November 13, 1869 , and two days later as official of the Trier diocese . As secretary of the Trier cathedral chapter, he had to manage the cathedral archives and the cathedral library.
