Gottfried Kentenich

Gottfried Kentenich (born May 17, 1873 in Bonn ; died October 9, 1939 there ) was a German historian and librarian .

Life

Gottfried Kentenich attended high school in Bonn from 1883 to 1892. He then studied classical philology , German and history from 1893 to 1896 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . At the same time he worked as an assistant at the Bonn library . In 1896 he received his doctorate in Bonn. In 1898 he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post and worked as a high school teacher in Bonn, Trier and Kempen. In 1901 he became a senior teacher at the Trier grammar school . One of his students was Peter Wust .

In 1903 he succeeded Max Keuffer as the city librarian and city archivist of the Trier city library . He cataloged the foundation of Franz Xaver Kraus (12,000 volumes). Kentenich converted the library into a utility library that was open to the public. In 1915 he was appointed professor. In 1934 he left the service voluntarily. He was now living in Bonn again.

Kentenich published 23 independent book publications and 403 articles in magazines. His “History of the City of Trier from its Foundation to the Present” is still a standard work of regional history.
