The Society for Useful Research in Trier (GfNF) is a registered association and was founded on April 1, 1801 under the name “Société des récherches utiles du département de la Sarre” (Society for Useful Research in the Saar Department ). The association is one of the oldest scientific associations in Germany. Its objectives include promoting science, inventions, useful discoveries, and culture.

Archaeological and historical studies came to the fore early on. The society's archaeological collection is now an essential part of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier .

In addition to the fields of archeology, history, folklore and the fine arts, the natural sciences, in particular the geosciences such as geology (e.g. by Johannes Steininger ), mineralogy and paleontology were important.
