Johann Baptist Keune

Johann Baptist Keune (born November 27, 1858 in Trier ; † January 12, 1937 there ) was a German teacher, museum director and archaeologist.

Life

Johann Baptist Keune studied classical studies in Marburg , Bonn and Vienna . From 1889 to 1892 he worked in Trier as a high school teacher and as a voluntary worker in the provincial museum. In 1883 he went to the grammar school in Metz - Montigny as a senior teacher , where he taught until 1899. In 1896 he was also part-time director of the Metz Museum, and since 1899 he was the full-time museum director. In 1906 Keune received the title of professor. During the First World War he was the art protection officer between the Meuse and the Vosges. After the war he was expelled from the new French administration in 1919. In the following years Keune was a volunteer at the Provincial Museum Trier and in the Society for Useful Research in Trier , of which he had been a member since 1891. From 1923 he was in charge of the common library. From 1926 until his death he was a board member of the company. Since 1929 he was an honorary member of the Trierisch Association . He contributed over 1500 articles to Paulys Realencyclopadie der Classischen Antiquity ( RE ).

The Keuneweg in Trier (since 1959) and the Keune elementary school in the Kürenz district are named after him.
