Guido Josef Groß

Guido Josef Groß (born February 17, 1925 in Offenbach am Glan , now Offenbach-Hundheim ; † January 25, 2010 ) was a German teacher and local researcher.

Life

Guido Groß was the son of the teacher Peter Groß and his wife Agnes Groß, geb. Choice. Before and during the Second World War , which he survived unscathed with the 2nd Pioneer Battalion 342, he attended the humanistic Friedrich Wilhelm High School in Trier from 1936 to 1943 , where he went after studying history, geography and German at the Johannes Gutenberg- University of Mainz returned. In 1954 he was at the University of Mainz with a thesis on the topic "Trier intellectual life under the influence of the Enlightenment and Romanticism (1750-1850)" to Dr. phil. PhD . He then taught German, history and geography as a teacher until 1980, most recently as director of studies . He felt closely connected to the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium and its foundation.

After the accidental death of his wife Klara Maria Groß, geb. Loch in 1968 Guido Groß married the senior teacher Hildegard, b. Rossa. In 1974 he was appointed by the Ministry of Culture to the University of Trier , where he worked as a representative of the Rhineland-Palatinate state examination office for teaching positions at secondary schools and grammar schools and also had a teaching position in geography.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Guido Groß undertook extensive trips, mainly to oriental countries, about which he reported in slide shows. Since about 1966 he has been involved in part-time jobs. a. as a member of the editorial team of the New Trierian Yearbook and from 1978 of the Kurtrierisches Jahrbuch.

In 1992 he became honorary chairman of the Society for Useful Research in Trier. In 1994 he took over the honorary position of deputy chairman of the Kurtrierisches Jahrbuch association.

From 1959 to 1976 he worked part-time at Schroedel Verlag on the design of the Seydlitz series, where he was co-author of 12 volumes of the Seydlitz Geography Works for High Schools (including Seydlitz No. 1 and 4 1977 in Japanese) and from 1967 to 1978 as an author of five booklets was active. In addition, he worked on the textbook geography thematically until 1981.

In 1992, with his help, the figures above the portal of the Liebfrauenkirche (Trier) in Trier, the originals of which are in museums in Trier and Berlin, were made as replicas or new creations and reinserted on the spot.

Due to his cultural commitment, in particular with regard to his research on Trier's history and intellectual life, as well as his lectures and publications, he was awarded the Dr. Erich Pies Prize in 2001.

Groß received his greatest award on May 13, 1985 in the Electoral Palace in Trier for his special merits through scientific activities in addition to his professional activity in a ceremony with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

His publications mainly contained the topic of the history and cultural history of the period of upheaval, which took place in Trier from around 1750 to 1850.

Groß was a member of the Geographical Society Trier (honorary member since 1985), the association of former students and teachers of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium Trier (honorary member since 1990), the Society for Useful Research in Trier (honorary chairman since 1992), the Trierisch association ( Honorary Member) and by Pro Libris.

After two heart attacks in the 1970s and 1980s, he suffered a severe stroke in January 2007 that made it impossible for him to write and speak. He spent his old age with his family until the end and died on January 25, 2010 after a long illness.

Guido Groß had two sons.
