Stephan Burger (born April 29, 1962 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is Archbishop of Freiburg and Metropolitan of the Upper Rhine Church Province .

Life

Stephan Burger grew up in Löffingen . He has two brothers and a sister. His younger brother Tutilo Burger OSB has been Archabbot of the Benedictine Archabbey of Beuron since 2011 .

After attending elementary school and secondary school, he switched to the Hersberg boarding school in Immenstaad on Lake Constance . He entered the Collegium Borromaeum , then the theological Konvikt in Freiburg im Breisgau, and studied philosophy and theology in Freiburg and Munich . On 20 May 1990 he received the Freiburg Cathedral , the ordination by Archbishop Oskar Saier and celebrated his first Mass in St. Michael in Löffingen. He was initially vicar in Tauberbischofsheim and Pforzheim . From 1995 he was first parish administrator and finally pastor of St. Mauritius in St. Leon-Rot . At the same time, from 2004 to 2006, he completed a degree in canon law at the Canon Institute of the University of Münster .

At the Officialat, the ecclesiastical court of the Archdiocese of Freiburg , he has been defender of marriage bonds (Defensor vinculi) since 2002 , church attorney (Promotor iustitiae) since 2006 and official and head of the ecclesiastical court since 2007 . On May 30, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Freiburg to succeed Robert Zollitsch . The episcopal ordination and ceremonial inauguration by his predecessor took place on June 29, 2014 in Freiburg Cathedral . Stephan Burger was appointed a member of the World Church Commission and chairman of the sub-commission for development issues (especially MISEREOR) as well as a member of the bishops 'working group “Labor Law” at the 2014 autumn general assembly of the German Bishops' Conference . Since 2016 he has also been chairman of the Caritas Commission .

honors and awards

On February 14, 2015, Stephan Burger was made an honorary member by the Philistine Senior Bernhard Uhde in the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Wildenstein included in the CV of Freiburg im Breisgau.

In 2016 he was appointed by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien as Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested on May 21, 2016 in St. Paulus Cathedral in Münster by Reinhard Cardinal Marx , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy . He belongs to the Albertus Magnus Freiburg Commandery of this papal lay order. He is also a member of the German Association of the Holy Land .

On June 18, 2016, on the occasion of the general assembly of the German Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta , Stephan Burger was invited to a pontifical office for the solemnity of St. John the Baptist in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Constance by the Association Chaplain, the Berlin Auxiliary Bishop Matthias Heinrich , and the President of the Order of Malta in Germany, Erich Prince von Lobkowicz , accepted into the Order of Malta as Honorary Conventual Chaplain (ECCap).
