Tutilo Burger OSB (born September 8, 1965 in Löffingen , as Heinz Burger ) is a German Benedictine and eleventh Archabbot of the Beuron Archabbey .

Life

Burger grew up as the son of the married couple Willi and Elisabeth Burger in Löffingen in the Black Forest . He has two brothers and a sister. Tutilo's brother Stephan is Archbishop of Freiburg . Burger's ancestors come from an old Prechtäler family. Andreas Burger and his wife Maria, née Störr, moved to Seppenhofen in 1896. The ancestors of the Löffingen Benitz families (maternal ancestors of Stephan and Tutilo Burger) can be traced back to Hinterzarten in the 18th century. He attended the Hersberg boarding school in Immenstaad on Lake Constance . When he graduated from high school in 1986, he had advanced courses in mathematics and religion.

Four weeks after graduating from high school, Burger entered the Benedictine Archabbey of St. Martin in Beuron in the Upper Danube Valley . In 1988 he made his profession before Archabbot Hieronymus Nitz . He studied Catholic theology in Salzburg and Rome (degree: Diplom-Theologe ). After his pastoral training in St. Peter in the Black Forest , he was ordained a priest on May 7, 1994 in Beuron . He held the monastic office of novice master for several years . After his ordination, he was sent to study business administration at the Ravensburg University of Cooperative Education , now the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Ravensburg . He got to know the practice for three years at OMIRA Oberland-Milchverwertung Ravensburg GmbH , the largest dairy in Baden-Württemberg. There he worked out the basics to take responsibility for all financial and economic affairs in Beuron.

After graduating with a degree in business administration , he was appointed Cellerar of the monastery in November 1997 . As a cellarer, he was manager of the monastery business enterprise with 40 employees in the bookstore, publishing house, laundry and the monastery-owned businesses such as butchery and hydroelectric power station. Another part of the work involved participating in various committees: the Friends' Association, the Building Committee, the non-profit foundation Vetus Latina, the Cellerar Conference of the German Upper Order Conference (AGCEP) and the Economic Council of the Beuron Benedictine Congregation.

In March 2001, Burger was appointed prior by the newly elected Archabbot Theodor Hogg . Hogg's term of office ended on August 16, 2011. For the vacant office, Burger took over the provisional management of the Archabbey.

On September 7, 2011, he was elected Archabbot of Beuron by secret ballot. In the election led by the first assistant abbot of the congregation, Abbot Franziskus Heereman von Zuydtwyck von Neuburg near Heidelberg, the previous prior Tutilo Burger achieved the two-thirds majority in the second ballot required by the electoral code. In the Benedictine order, the archabbot belongs to the higher superiors ( superiores maiores ).

Archabbot Tutilo, who, like his predecessor, intends to expand the Beuron monastery as the spiritual center of the region, opted for the motto “ Christ nos perducat ” (German: “Christ lead us”) based on a Benedictine rule . On November 12, 2011, the Archbishop of Freiburg, Robert Zollitsch, in the presence of Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann , District Administrator Dirk Gaerte , the chairman of the Circle of Friends of the Archabbey Tanja Gönner , numerous abbesses and the head of the House of Hohenzollern, Karl Friedrich von Hohenzollern, gave the new Archabbot the ordination of the abbot to a solemn pontifical office .

Tutilo Burger is the managing director of the non-profit foundation Vetus Latina based in Beuron. He is also a member of the Beuron Schola. In addition to various tasks in the spiritual field and in the administration of the monastery, his personal passion is playing the organ.

In 2015 he was appointed by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick Cardinal O'Brien as Grand Officer of the Papal Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested in the German Lieutenancy on October 10, 2015 in the Mainz Cathedral by Bishop Heinrich Mussinghoff . He is a member of the Ravensburg Commandery of the Papal Lay Order. He is a member of the German Association of the Holy Land . In 2019 he became prior of the Ravensburg Commandery.

Abbot coat of arms

His rank as abbot of a monastery is represented by the cords (tassels) on the prelate's hat. The color of the coat of arms and the star are taken from the Beuron coat of arms. One of the two pilgrim sticks has been replaced by the Löffinger spoon. The coat of arms is supplemented by the abbot's staff and a castle that relates to his name.
