Franziskus (Angelo Sylvester Alexander Maximilian Apollinaris) Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck OSB (born March  7, 1946 in Hanover ) was abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Neuburg in Heidelberg from 1988 to 2016 .

family

Franziskus Heereman comes from the old Dutch noble family Heereman von Zuydtwyck . He is one of five children from the marriage of Sylvester Freiherr Heereman van Zuydtwyck (1905–1991) and Alexandra Alice Countess von Hardenberg (1912–2010). He is the brother of Johannes Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck , President of Malteser International , and the uncle of Sylvester Freiherr Heereman van Zuydtwyck LC , Vicar General of the Legionaries of Christ . He is the cousin of Constantin Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck , former member of the Bundestag and President of the German Farmers' Association.

Life

After graduating from the College of St. Thomas the Dominicans , he made a trip to the USA in 1966 . From 1966 he studied philosophy at the University of Friborg ; In 1968 he moved to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . In 1970 he joined the order of the Trappists (also: Cistercians of the Strict Observance (OCSO) ) in the Mariawald Abbey in the Eifel . After studying Catholic theology in Friborg he received on 15 April 1977 by Klaus Hemmerle , the Bishop of Aachen , the ordination . His first Mass he celebrated a day later in Westbevern .

Franziskus Heereman was appointed Superior ad nutum in 1980, a temporary superior of the Mariawald Abbey. In 1986 the convent of the Benedictine Abbey of Neuburg in Heidelberg postulated him as prior administrator ; In 1988 he was elected 4th abbot of Neuburg Abbey. His motto is: Per ducatum evangelii - Through the guidance of the gospel . According to the rules of the Beuron Congregation , his term of office ended on March 7, 2016 with his 70th birthday.
