Winfried Schwab OSB (real name Reinhold Erwin Schwab ; born July 23, 1964 in Fulda ) is a German Benedictine and was abbot of Neuburg Abbey near Heidelberg from 2016 to 2018 .

Life

Reinhold Schwab, who grew up in Dipperz in the diocese of Fulda , studied law and history in Heidelberg, among other places. In 1995 he entered the Austrian Benedictine Abbey of Admont and received in memory of St. Boniface the religious name Winfried . He studied philosophy and theology (Dipl. Theol.) In Graz, Salzburg and at Einsiedeln Abbey . On June 17, 2006, he was ordained a priest in the Admont Collegiate Church by Bishop Egon Kapellari . He celebrated his home prime on July 2, 2006 in St. Antonius d. Hermit u. St. Placidus in Dipperz.

Winfried Schwab held the inner monastic offices of subprior , novice master and cleric magister in Admont . Outwardly, he represented the abbey as cultural representative and press officer. He was also a member of the presidium of the Austrian Benedictine Congregation. From 2009 to 2010 he was in charge of the parishes Großsölk and St. Nikolai , and from 2010 to 2015 the pilgrimage church of Frauenberg an der Enns , located near Admont Abbey, as pastor and pastor.

Under the chairmanship of Abbot President Albert Schmidt , Winfried Schwab postulated the election chapter of the Benedictines of Stift Neuburg on October 5, 2015 as the 5th abbot of the Heidelberg monastery. Winfried Schwab is involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land and has been a long-term member of the German Association of the Holy Land . In 2008 Cardinal Grand Master John Patrick Foley appointed him Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . On September 20, 2008, the Grand Prior of the Austrian Lieutenancy Archbishop Alois Kothgasser invested it in the Frauenkirchen basilica . On September 24, 2016 Winfried Schwab was appointed Commander of the Papal Laity Order. In 2017 he succeeded Michael HF Brock as Prior of the Southwest German Order Province.

In autumn 2016 he was appointed to the ethics committee of the medical faculty of Heidelberg University.

In 1984 he and others founded the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Adolphiana in Fulda . He is a member of other connections in the CV , ÖCV and MKV and belonged to the CV suburb of Mannheim / Heidelberg (1991/92). Since June 17, 2017 he has been the chaplain of the Cartell Association of German Catholic Student Associations .

The Abbot Preses of the Beuron Benedictine Congregation , Albert Schmidt, relieved Abbot Winfried Schwab from his position on September 21, 2018: “During the visitation, which began in May 2017, it had been shown that the responsible bodies were not involved in some important decisions were involved in the way that would have complied with church regulations. ”Abbot Winfried Schwab has applied to the responsible church authorities for an independent review against this decision.

As cultural representative, Winfried Schwab was responsible for the development and expansion of the contemporary art collection in Admont Abbey. He is also a member of the editorial team of the quarterly publication "kunst und kirche" and a member of the jury for the Art Prize of the Archdiocese of Freiburg ".

Another focus of his work is dance of death research . Schwab is a member of the European Dance of Death Association , which promotes science and research, art and design in connection with the dance of death and related topics.

Abbot Winfried initiated the 1st art prize for the appreciation of food in 2018 . The art prize invites up-and-coming artists to work on the topic of appreciating food and avoiding food waste autonomously and to deal artistically with the problem. The prize will be awarded as part of the FOOD-VALUE-FESTIVAL on October 7, 2018 in the Benedictine monastery Stift Neuburg, Heidelberg. The art prize and festival are funded by the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) as part of a funding project.
